Day 1-San Luis Obispo-The Apple Farm Inn

We left Barstow this morning around 10:30 am after what seemed like endless packing, cleaning and organizing. The boys are so glad school is over and we are all super excited about the trip-by far the longest we have ever taken. The animals are set up with a housesitter and we are ready to go although it will be hard being away from our dogs and cats for so long. At over 2400 miles, 21 days and three states this trip is going to be epic. Today is going to be super hot in the desert and it was already 100 degrees when we left.It is a short drive to wine country, only 5 hours of travel.  Our first stop is The Apple Farm Inn in San Luis Obispo,CA. It is super cute and even though I thought it might be overdone from the pictures online it actually looks like acountry home and they have free cookies for the boys, not to mention wine-their own label-for us-we chose the cabernet but they also had chardonnay. After we get our key, which is an actual key not a keycard we went to our room and were thrilled with the decor with floral wallpaper, antiques two very high comfy double beds and a fireplace. There was also a gift basket with sparkling apple cider for the boys and chocolates along with a keepsake wooden apple for us. I wanted to keep the soaps they had in the bathroom but I wasnt fast enough-the boys opened them first. Ted and I left the boys to hook up their x-box and took our wine to walk around the garden, it is so beautiful and almost seems tropical because of the stream that runs next to the Inn and all the flowers. There is a millhouse with a large waterwheel and the pool and spa look very inviting. When we got back to the room the boys were hungry so we decided to try the restaurant. Ted and cole share the prime rib while Jayden got a Caesar salad and I got the salad bar and a mushroom tart. The salad bar features the farms produce and is very good, I especially like the mix of salad greens which are peppery and crisp. Everyone loved their food and for dessert we used the coupon we got for veterans that gave us a free fruit pie-we chose apple, of course- and we also appreciated the $25.00 discount on dinner. After dinner we took our pie back to our room where the guys devoured half of it and then we headed to the hot tub which felt great since the temps were in the sixties and after awhile in the hot water we were all ready for the pool to cool off. It was the perfect way to relax before bed and after we got back to the room we all went to sleep quickly while we watched tv.
